I got this email (I guess you could call it a press release) from Dr. Zong, Surgical Director of NYC FootCare:
popular boots such as UGGs, are not only keeping their feet warm, but are doing a lot of damage as well. Winter boots that are made without support can cause your feet to become sore and achy. Most people suffer from foot and leg problems due to the lack arches in winter boots, such as UGGs, which lead to heal spurs and also shin splints.
Well, this isn't exactly news to me (though usually my doc typically spends more time talking to me about the danger of heels than anything else), but I'll admit, on really bad weather days, I've slipped into *ugh* a pair of Uggs.
I wear these aptly-named ugly boots from the apartment to the car, from the car to work, and then wear my real boots or shoes for the day. I don't wear them for the comfort (or even for better balance -- in fact, I tend to feel off-kilter when I'm not wearing heels lol), I wear them to protect my real footwear from the bad elements of Mother Nature.
In fact, I worry greatly about anyone who would wear Uggs all day. But not for the same reason Dr. Zong does.
Yes, I worry about the poor spirits of those who eschew real shoes (my rather obvious point of view), but who on earth wears such hot, sweaty boots all day?!
Didn't any of them learn about that from grade school?
Once, and I mean
once, I decided to be lazy and not put my tennis shoes into my book bag and I had to wear those big sloppy faux-sheepskin-lined plastic snow galoshes all day at school -- and home again.
It was horrible! Those pools of water my toes where squishing around in weren't from leaks in the boots -- it was from the sweat!
Gross.
Gross.
Gross.
I couldn't
wait to get home, take those boots off, and, before I even changed my socks, put my tennis shoes into my book bag for the next day. Then I washed my feet, slathered them with lotion, sprinkled baby powder on them, and slid fresh socks on.
Never again.
Never ever.
